- Physical location of data in main memory must be calculated
- This is expensive, e.g. 1000s of cycles!!
- TLB (translation lookaside buffer ) — cache stores location in main memory of recently used data
- When main memory is full:
- Disk may be used for storage
- Or your executable may die
- Make sure program fits into main memory
