Commandline: why???

Unix/Linux and HPC experts always use the commandline — why?

GUI vs Command Line
  • Harder to the trivial things, but easier to do everything else.
  • Not everything has a GUI!
  • Vastly more powerful and flexible than any (practical) GUI
    • . . .  and can do many things that no GUI can (next page).
Remote and Shared Systems
  • Remote systems not usually available via GUI
  • Orders of magnitude less resource-hungry than GUI
    • Imagine 100 instances of Aero, Aqua, GNOME/KDE running on Man2's login node. . .
