Linux at UMIST

Support from ISD

Officially, support for Linux at ISD is Level 3 and for the RedHat distribution only. In practice the situation is rather better. Moreover, the situation is currently under review (see below) --- the situation will probably improve.

Plans for Linux at UMIST

ISD's software support levels are currently under major review at the time of writing (21 January 2002). In all probablility support for Linux will be improved. It seems invevitable that Linux will appear or more user's desktops and that Linux (Beowulf) clusters will replace some so-called supercomputers.

Examples of Use At UMIST

• Many of the servers looking after services used by staff and students everyday (via their Windows boxes) are running Linux.
  
  
• Biomolecular Sciences has a Linux cluster; Theoretical Physics has a small Beowulf cluster; Mechanical Engineering are considering replacing their SGI Origin 2000 with a Beowuld Cluster.
