4. Ghosting Procedure

4.1. Creation of image

  1. 5GB partition created at start of a single, 20 GB disk. Remaining space left unpartitoned.
  2. Ghost 5.1d used to download ISD Windows 2000 Cluster Image to 5GB partition on disk.
  3. Linux installed using RedHat 9 installation set CDs. Druid used during RedHat 9 install to create required Linux partitions in remaining unpartitioned space on disk.
  4. No boot loader installed at this time.
  5. Logged into RedHat 9 and copied GRUB files from /usr/local/share/grub/i386-pc- to /boot/grub.
  6. GRUB menu file menu.lst created in /boot/grub containing entries for booting Windows 2000 and RedHat 9 OS.
  7. Windows 2000 set as default OS.
  8. GRUB boot floppy created.
  9. Image uploaded of the whole disk using Symantec Ghost 7.5 (Ghost 5.1d does not support Linux).
  10. Note, GRUB cannot be installed in the Master Boot Record (MBR) on the image as Ghost cannot patch it.

4.2. Download procedure for dual boot image

  1. Symantec Ghost 7.5 used to download dual boot image to disk.
  2. Once download is complete, machine reboots and goes through a mini Windows 2000 setup, where it detects the hardware. At the end of this procedure the machine name must be input. The Windows 2k partition is then complete.
  3. GRUB boot floppy inserted and machine is rebooted. The boot floppy is used to install GRUB onto the MBR of the disk, and point GRUB in the MBR to the rest of the GRUB support files including the menu.lst file in /boot/grub of the /boot Linux partition.
          grub> root (hd0,1)
          grub> install /grub/stage1 d (hd0) /grub/stage2 p /grub/menu.lst
        
  4. The GRUB floppy is removed, and now when the machine reboots the user is presented with a choice of OS to boot from a menu.
