Brief Download, Installation and Configuration Instructions

Here we describe how to:

Download

To download, point your browser at ftp://ftp.ssh.com/pub/ssh. Locate the exe file SSHSecureShellClient-X.Y.Z.exe where X.Y.Z indicates the version of the software (3.2.3at the time of writing). Double clicking on this file will start the download procedure. Save the file to a location on your hard disk.

Installation

Go to "Start", "Run" then click on "Browse". Locate the exe file just saved in the above step on your hard disk and select "Open", then "OK"; this will start the setup procedure.

During the installation you will be asked to specify an installation location. You can accept the default location for the software installation or browse to an alternative location.

Accept the defaults for the components to be installed. After confirming setup information SSH will then be installed on your machine. Once finished you should have both SSH Secure Shell Client and SSH Secure Shell File Transfer Client desktop and start menu items.

Configuring the Client to Login to Cosmos

You can configure an SSH connection to Cosmos by following the instructions given below, alternatively, you can download the file cosmos.ssh2 which contains all settings necessary to make the connection. Save this file on your PC then double-click on the file when you want to connect to Cosmos.

To create an SSH profile for Cosmos:

  1. Choose "SSH Secure Shell Client" from either the desktop or start menu.
  2. Click on "Profiles" then "Add Profile".
  3. Type "Cosmos" as the profile name.
  4. Click on "Add to Profiles".
Next you will need to edit this profile. Choose, "Profiles", "Edit Profiles", and select the "Cosmos" profile created in the previous step.

  1. Under the "Connection" tab, enter "cosmos.umist.ac.uk" as the "Host name".
  2. Next make "Keyboard Interactive" the preferred authentication method. Under the "Authentication" tab, move "Keyboard Interactive" so that it is at the top of the "Authentication methods" list.
  3. Choose the "Tunneling" tab and tick the "Tunnel X11 connections" box.
  4. Highlight "Profiles" on the far left of the pane before clicking "OK".

Your Cosmos profile is then complete. To use the profile to make a connection to Cosmos choose "Profiles", "Cosmos". You will then be prompted to enter your eUMIST username and password.

If you want to run software that uses X Windows graphics and you have Hummingbird Exceed installed, you will need to start the Exceed Xserver in passive mode before running the X Windows software from the SSH connection.

Configuring the Client for File Transfer to Cosmos

You can configure an SSH file transfer connection to Cosmos by following the instructions given below, alternatively, you can download the file "cosmosftp.ssh2" which contains all settings necessary to connect to Cosmos and transfer files. Save this file on your PC then double-click on the file when you want to make a file transfer connection to Cosmos.

  1. Choose "SSH Secure Shell File Transfer Client" from the either the desktop or start menu.
  2. Click on "Profiles", "Add Profile".
  3. Type "Cosmosftp" as the profile name.
  4. Click on "Add to Profiles".

Edit the profile you created in the above step:

  1. On the "Connection" tab enter "cosmos.umist.ac.uk" as the "Host name".
  2. Highlight "Profiles" on the left hand side of the pane before clicking "OK".
Your Cosmos ftp profile is then complete. To use the profile to connect to Cosmos choose "Profiles", "cosmosftp".

After entering your eUMIST username and password you will see two panes, one, the right hand pane, displaying your files/directories on Cosmos and the other, the left hand pane, displaying available drives on your PC. You will then be able to transfer files between your PC and your Cosmos account by dragging and dropping between the left and right hand panes. (Tip: before commencing with the file transfer, press the F5 key.)
